Projects
Below are the projects that we consider relevant to the Institute. Some of them have IRCOS as the organizer or executor. Others are partnerships that we have developed with companies, universities, the third sector, and national and international government agencies, to support our preservation initiatives and the sustainable relationship between communities and the environment.

All are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are global targets established by the United Nations (UN), divided into four dimensions: social, environmental, economic and institutional. They are:

Recifes Costeiros Project
“Integrated Management Initiative for the Coastal Reef System between Tamandaré - PE and Paripueira - AL”, known as the “Projeto Recifes Costeiros”, which began in 1998 with the aim of providing the scientific basis and technical assistance necessary to support management measures in the APA Costas dos Corais, promoting the conservation of coastal and marine biodiversity and the sustainability of economic activities that depends on the exploitation of the natural resources of this area, and at the same time, improving the living conditions of local populations.
Reef Check Brasil
With 20 years of activity, Reef Check Brasil coordinates and carries out actions to monitor the health of Brazilian coral reefs, generating useful data to support actions for the management and conservation of reef ecosystems. Reef Check 's actions are the result of partnerships established between universities, NGOs, government agencies and other entities that work to protect the environment.

Continuous monitoring of the Tamandaré Closed Area
Maintenance activities, shared local management, monitoring and dissemination of a practical example of recovery and conservation of reef ecosystems in the region through local and social management practices, applied research and financial investments. The conservation of biodiversity, the sustainability of local fisheries production and the dissemination of results and replicability of methods are the ongoing goals of the project.
Fishing Forever Campaign - Shrimp is ours
Monitoring of shrimp trawling in the Tamandaré muds for the suggestion of management as a rotation system between fishing areas and total restriction of use (rest areas) in the study area, as an alternative for organizing sustainable artisanal fishing in the APA Costa dos Corais region.
Publication of Ordinance 1,079/2022, which establishes rules for sustainable shrimp fishing and thus protects marine species threatened with extinction.

Fishing Forever Campaign - River Mullet
Continue monitoring, research and conservation actions in the estuarine complex of Rio Formoso, focusing on mullet, through an integrated space-time approach, involving local actors in the actions through the valorization of local ecological knowledge and traditional practices
Mesophotic reefs
Study of mesophotic reefs of the Fernando de Noronha Chain and Rocas Atoll.

Coral restoration
To evaluate the effects of coral transplants for rehabilitation, focusing on the restoration of the species: Mussismilia harttii and Millepora alcicornis, aiming to support and subsidize more comprehensive restoration initiatives in Brazilian coral environments.
